The town of Kašperské Hory is situated at the foothills of the central part of the Šumava Mountains bordering with the Šumava National Park. It is located in the mountainous terrain, on the south-facing slope over the Opolenecký and the Zlatý Streams and the Otava valley, in between the towns of Sušice, Železná Ruda and Vimperk.
Rich history of this small, nevertheless important, royal mining town and its interesting position make it an attractive tourist destination. Kařperské Hory nowadays represent one of the leading Šumava recreational resorts, offering agreeable passing of leisure time as well as quality services throughout the whole year.
The Kašperk castle, built by the Roman Emperor Charles IV, has been towering above the town since 1356. The castle became the symbol of then new, Kašperské Hory branch of the Golden Path, which was an important trade route from Bavarian Passau to Kašperské Hory built from the order of this significant monarch. The castle garrison's task also was to guard the border with the neighbouring Bavaria and the safety of the local gold-mining district, the most significant source of gold in the pre-Hussite epoch.
