Mochov is a small settlement located 5 km northwest of Hartmanice.
The first written mention of the settlement of Mochov dates back to 1336. In 1494, one of the first glass smelters in Šumava caught fire near Mochov.
She produced the so-called forest glass, which has a specific greenish color and bubbles. A prerequisite for the establishment of the glass factory was sufficient wood and quartz in the vicinity. The greenish shade is due to the content of iron oxide contained in the glass sand.
The settlement of Mochov is also interesting for its rows of memorial trees. A short line of deciduous larch trees is planted along the path. Of the original six, one tree was cut down in 2006. The age of the trees is estimated at more than 150 years, trunk circumferences range from 370 to 430 cm, height from 15 to 23 m (data from 2016). These are some of the largest larches in the Czech Republic.
Larch trees are protected by the state as a landscape landmark.
Not far from the larches, a more than a hundred-year-old hornbeam elm grows on private property. However, it was removed from the list of protected trees in 2022 after it was broken up.
From the settlement there is a wonderful view of the Pstružné brook valley and the Šumava peaks. A marked Farmer's Educational Trail and a green tourist sign lead through Mochov.
A walk full of amazing views from Keplů or Stará Huta to Mochov (combined, for example, with a visit to Horní Kochánov) can be definitely recommended. There are traces of quartz and gold mining in the vicinity of Mochov.
